Madrid, 7 July 2022 (TDI):  Prime Minister of Japan Kishida Fumio held a meeting with the Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez.

The meeting was held during the visit of Prime Minister Kishida to Spain to attend the NATO Summit. The meeting duration was approximately 25 minutes.

Prime Minister Kishida appreciated the efforts of Prime Minister Sánchez as the chairperson of the NATO Summit Meeting. He expressed his aims to further increase cooperation as the strategic partner with Spain.

He also mentioned the realization of a “Free and Open Indo- Pacific”. Japan under Prime Minister Kishida has formulated its national interests in terms of the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” doctrine.

Prime Minister Sánchez responded by saying that Spain gives great importance to its relations with Japan. Also, he showed his interest to increase this cooperation, especially in the field of green energy, digitalization, and cyber technologies.

Both leaders expected the collaboration between the companies of Spain and Japan in renewable energy including wind power and hydrogen.

In addition, they expected to collaborate in third markets like the Caribbean and Latin America. They also expressed that the collaboration between both states will be promoted through the platforms like Japan-Spain Symposium.

Russia-Ukraine crises

The two leaders agreed that the aggression by Russia toward Ukraine undermines the foundations of international order. It affects the security situation of Europe as well as Asia.

The unilateral change of the status quo through force is not acceptable. In addition, the unity between the countries having fundamental values has never mattered more than now.

They agreed that due to this crisis, the world is facing energy supply shortages, food shortages, and price increases. Therefore they should work together to help countries that are most affected by this crisis.

Indo-Pacific

The two leaders have also exchanged views on the affairs of the Indo-Pacific. In addition, they confirmed that the unilateral change of the status quo through force is highly unacceptable.

They also agreed to continue the cooperation to deal with missile and abduction issues by North Korea.
