Japanese Foreign Minister met UNGA President-elect

Tokyo, 27 August 2021 (TDI): Minister for Foreign Affairs Japan, Motegi Toshimitsu held a meeting with Abdulla Shahid, President-elect of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives. 

Japan extends its full support to President Shahid in addressing the challenges faced by the international community, said Motegi. Motegi also expressed his expectation for President Shahid’s leadership in realizing the important reform of the UN Security Council.

In reference to the recent Afghan issue, the two sides expressed their concerns over the deteriorating situation in the country and emphasized the crucial role of the international community in Afghanistan.

While talking about North Korea, the two sides exchanged views on addressing issues while Motegi sought understanding and cooperation towards the immediate resolution of the abductions issue, to which President Shahid offered his support.

Both sides also discussed the Japan-Maldives relationship, both exchanged their views in ways to deepen and strengthen their relations.
