Tokyo, 15 September 2023 (TDI): Kamikawa Yoko, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, engaged in a substantive telephone conversation on September 14, with Antony Blinken, Secretary of State of the United States of America.
The meeting, lasting approximately 10 minutes, was marked by a constructive exchange on a range of critical issues, reaffirming the enduring strength of the Japan-U.S. Alliance.
Foreign Minister Kamikawa began by expressing her commitment to fostering a strong relationship with Secretary Blinken and enhancing the robust Japan-U.S. Alliance, emphasizing its current vitality.
In response, Secretary Blinken conveyed his warm congratulations to Foreign Minister Kamikawa on her recent appointment to office.
The conversation encompassed discussions on the significant role Japan holds as the chair of the Group of Seven (G7) and its dedication to upholding and reinforcing the free and open international order, which is presently under strain.

Both ministers concurred on the need for close collaboration regarding regional concerns, with a shared commitment to address Russia’s actions concerning Ukraine, matters related to China, and North Korea’s nuclear and missile program, including the pressing issue of abductions.
In recognition of the increasingly complex regional security environment, the two ministers resolved to work jointly in enhancing the deterrence and response capabilities of the Japan-U.S. Alliance, building upon the milestones achieved during the Japan-U.S. “2+2” meeting held in January.
