Japan takes part in Joint Trilateral Maritime exercises

Trilateral missile warning and ballistic missile search and tracking exercises were held in the vicinity of Hawaii.

Tokyo, 16 August 2022 (TDI): Trilateral missile warning and ballistic missile search and tracking exercises were held in the vicinity of Hawaii. The exercise was held among Japan, the United States, and the Republic of Korea.

This trilateral Naval defense exercise was a result of an agreement signed on June 11 between the three countries.

This trilateral exercise was the part of Missile Defence exercise (Pacific Dragon Exercise 2022) in Hawaii. The United States, the United Kingdom, Korea, and Canada were part of this naval defense exercise.

The Pacific Dragon exercise was held from August 8 to 14. Japanese Maya-class guided missile destroyer in the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) also participated.

Moreover, the JMSDF conducted the Missile Defence Exercise among the nations to strengthen trilateral cooperation. This Maritime exercise was aimed to realize a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” for the nations.

This trilateral maritime exercise was to significantly improve JMSDF’s tactical capabilities. Secondly, it aimed to enhance collaboration among the naval forces of countries that participated.

Trilateral Maritime Agreements in the Past:

The first ever Trilateral Cooperation  Agreement was signed between Japan, the UK, and the USA during the discussion at the Pentagon on 20 October 2016.

In that meeting heads of all the three Naval forces including other prominent government officials met to achieve “mutually desired strategic effects”.

All three countries are working on the horizontal and vertical development of defensive and offensive strategic weapons. For example, all three countries were working on the development of the F-35 fighters.

Furthermore, the US and Japan were jointly developing the SM-3 Ballistic Missile Defense program.
