NAROWAL, (TDI): Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan, Akamatsu Shuichi, inaugurated a solar-powered irrigation system in Tehsil Shakar Garh, District Narowal, on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
The project, managed by Rural Aid Pakistan, a grassroots non-governmental organization, aims to combat poverty and empower vulnerable rural communities through sustainable development.
The initiative, funded under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) program, received financial assistance of $65,617.
This funding facilitated the installation of seven solar-powered irrigation pumps and facilities designed to enhance agricultural productivity by providing an efficient and sustainable irrigation system for the region.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by representatives of Rural Aid Pakistan, local government officials, community leaders, and local farmers.

Rural Aid Pakistan, with over three decades of experience working with rural farmers, has implemented numerous development projects in collaboration with government agencies and international donors.
The Japanese grant is expected to significantly improve agricultural practices, increase crop yields, and enhance the income of local farmers.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Akamatsu congratulated Rural Aid Pakistan on the successful completion of the project.
He expressed his hope that the initiative would empower farmers, boost agricultural productivity, and contribute to improving livelihoods and the local economy.
“The Government of Japan remains committed to supporting the people of Pakistan in improving their living standards,” Ambassador Akamatsu said. “This project symbolizes the strong bond between the people of Japan and Pakistan, and I hope it will further strengthen our bilateral relations.”

The solar-powered irrigation system is anticipated to serve as a model for sustainable agricultural development in the region, aligning with global efforts to promote environmentally friendly and economically viable farming practices.
