Tokyo, 15 June 2023 (TDI): Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio of Japan and President Surangel S. WHIPPS, Jr. of Palau held a summit meeting on June 14. The meeting focused on strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

President Whipps, who is currently visiting Japan, expressed his pleasure at meeting Prime Minister Kishida again, highlighting the trust and appreciation Palau has for Japan’s sincere efforts to ensure the safety of ALPS-treated water. Prime Minister Kishida, in turn, expressed his gratitude for Palau’s understanding and trust in Japan’s endeavors.

During the meeting, the leaders discussed various areas of cooperation, with a particular emphasis on tourism promotion and infrastructure development, both vital to Palau’s economic growth.

Prime Minister Kishida expressed his strong support for the “2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent” outlined by the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), along with the “family first” principle for regional peace and security. He reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to the Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) vision, emphasizing cooperation with Pacific Island countries while respecting their individual agendas.

Regarding the discharge of ALPS-treated water, Prime Minister Kishida informed President Whipps that Japan has been actively engaged in intensive dialogues with Pacific Island countries, following the agreement reached during discussions with the PIF delegation in February. President Whipps expressed appreciation for Japan’s ongoing efforts in this regard.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Kishida briefed President Whipps on the discussions held during the G7 Hiroshima Summit, which covered pressing global challenges such as climate change, as well as matters related to global peace and stability.

The summit concluded on a positive note, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to deepening the Japan-Palau relationship. The discussions served as a testament to the mutual trust and shared vision between the two countries, paving the way for further collaboration and cooperation in the future.
