Beirut, 17 August 2024 (TDI): Around 10 people were killed, including two children, and 5 were injured by an Israeli strike on a residential building in Nabatieh city in south Lebanon.
The victims were all Syrian nationals. The number of fatalities could be increased further as some injured are in critical condition.
The strike came after ceasefire negotiations between Palestinian group Hamas and Israel in Doha paused on Friday with negotiators due to meet again next week.
Diplomatic efforts have so far failed to alleviate the suffering endured by the Palestinians for over more than ten months of the conflict.
US President Joe Biden insisted after the latest round of negotiations that “we are closer than we have ever been.”
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to visit Israel this weekend to push the latest proposal for the ceasefire, the State Department said.
Egyptian, US and Qatari mediators have been seeking to finalize details of a framework initially outlined by Joe Biden in May, which he said Israel had proposed.
Tensions have intensified in the region in recent weeks, after a rocket attack blamed on Hezbollah killed twelve children and teens in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
