Jerusalem, 10 May 2024 (TDI): The Israeli arson attack on the United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA) Headquarters in Jerusalem on 9th May has elicited widespread condemnation. To name a few, Palestine, Qatar, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) have denounced the arson.

Response of UNRWA

After weeks of constant attack, Israel set fire to the UNRWA for Palestinian refugees forcing it to temporarily close its operations, reported head of the agency, Philippe Lazzarini. Not only was it termed an “outrageous development” but also a call was made to “put an end to these attacks and hold all those accountable.”

Furthermore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the State of Palestine condemned the arson attack vehemently. It called the assault a “deliberate attempt” to sabotage the efforts of organizations that have been aiding Palestinian people against Israeli occupation.

Moreover, the arson elicited strong condemnation from Qatar as well which termed Israeli aggression a flagrant violation of International Humanitarian Law. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Office, it forewarned that the arson attack aims to deprive Palestinians of basic amenities.

While expressing condemnation, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia held Israeli occupying forces accountable for the arson attacks. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also said that radical Israeli settlers have a history of attacks against Palestinians, and aid and humanitarian groups.

Additionally, the Arab community has reaffirmed support for UNRWA because of its unwavering stance in favor of the Palestinian people’s rights. It has also called for the international community and the world leaders to put in significant effort to put an end to all criminal violations of Israel.

Conclusively, it must be ascertained that the Israeli occupation is held responsible for its ongoing breach of international laws and conventions.
