Israeli Air Strikes: UN Security Council Holds Emergency Meeting Today

UNITED NATIONS, (TDI): An emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will take place on Monday at Iran’s request, following Israeli air strikes on Iranian military sites in retaliation for a missile attack attributed to Tehran on October 1.

The Swiss presidency of the UNSC said that the meeting was convened in response to Iran’s appeal, which received support from Russia, China, and Algeria.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi sent a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the UNSC president, calling for immediate international condemnation of what Iran labeled “an unjustifiable act of aggression.”

He stated that while most of Israel’s missiles were intercepted by Iranian defense systems, the attack caused substantial damage to key military facilities and resulted in the deaths of four Iranian soldiers.

“This attack constitutes a clear violation of Iran’s sovereignty,” Araghchi asserted, emphasizing Iran’s right to self-defense. “We reserve the inherent right… to respond to this criminal aggression.”

The Israeli military confirmed that its operations targeted Iranian missile factories and military assets within Iran, warning Tehran against any further retaliation.

In contrast, Iranian media characterized the strikes as “weak,” claiming only minor damage to radar systems. Analysts suggest that Iran may be trying to de-escalate tensions to prevent a wider regional conflict.
