Israel Looking to Forcefully Expel Palestinians from Gaza to South Sudan

Gaza (TDI): Israel is reportedly in confidential discussions with South Sudan over a potential plan to forcefully relocate Palestinians from Gaza, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The talks, reported on August 12, reflect a broader Israeli initiative to encourage mass emigration from the enclave, which has been devastated by a 22-month Israeli aggression.

Six individuals with direct knowledge of the negotiations confirmed to the Associated Press that while talks have occurred, their status remains preliminary.

From South Sudan’s perspective, the agreement could offer diplomatic and financial benefits. Observers note that the impoverished, conflict-stricken nation may view the opportunity as a strategic opening to strengthen ties with the US and Israel.

However, South Sudan’s civil society leaders have voiced deep reservations. Edmund Yakani, a prominent activist, warned that his country “should not become a dumping ground for people,” emphasizing that leveraging displaced populations as negotiation tools would strain local sensitivities given long-standing religious and ethnic tensions.

Egypt has actively opposed such relocation plans. Officials are reportedly lobbying South Sudan to reject the proposal, citing fears of destabilizing population flows across the region.

Human rights organizations and much of the international community have condemned the idea, warning that even if framed as voluntary, mass migration from Gaza could amount to forcible expulsion and violate international law.

Critics further argue that such a move risks rendering Palestinian displacement permanent and could pave the way for Israel to annex Gaza and rebuild settlements.

The unfolding developments echo earlier proposals examined by consultants from Boston Consulting Group, who had modeled the feasibility of relocating up to a quarter of Gaza’s population to countries including Somalia and Somaliland.

That plan, introduced in early 2025, triggered widespread backlash and was ultimately disavowed by BCG after public outcry. As of mid‑August 2025, the fate of these discussions remains uncertain, a cautious dance with profound moral, geopolitical, and humanitarian implications.
