Tehran (TDI): Tel Aviv launched a new “broad-scale” wave of airstrikes on Tehran on Saturday after Iran fired another round of missiles toward Israel, intensifying the ongoing regional conflict.

The Israeli military said its air defense systems were working to intercept the incoming missiles. Sirens sounded in several locations including Tel Aviv, central Israel and the West Bank, according to Israeli media reports.

Meanwhile, images circulating on social media and from international news agencies showed fire and heavy smoke at Mehrabad Airport, one of Iran’s busiest airports located within the city limits. Reports suggested the strikes may have hit fuel storage facilities, and at least one aircraft was reportedly on fire. The Israeli military later confirmed it had begun a “broad-scale wave of strikes” on targets in Tehran after the latest missile launches from Iran.

Iranian state media reported explosions in western Tehran shortly after the Israeli announcement. The escalation comes as the Iran–Israel War 2026 enters its second week, with hostilities expanding across several parts of the region.

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that only Iran’s “unconditional surrender” would end the conflict, raising concerns about the prospects for a diplomatic resolution. Earlier, Trump had also suggested that Washington should have a role in selecting a successor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed during the early phase of the conflict.

Iran strongly rejected those remarks. The country’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saied Iravani, said Trump’s comments violated the principle of non-interference in sovereign states. Speaking at a UN press conference, he described the US–Israel offensive as a “criminal war” and accused the two countries of targeting civilian infrastructure.

Iravani said that more than 1,300 civilians, including women and children, had been killed in the strikes so far, with thousands more injured. He added that airports, hospitals, schools, residential areas and other civilian facilities had been hit during the attacks.

Meanwhile, the United States Central Command said more than 3,000 Iranian targets had been struck over the past week, including Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps headquarters, command centers, missile sites and naval assets.

The conflict has also expanded beyond Iran and Israel. Israeli forces carried out additional strikes in Lebanon, including in the southern suburbs of Beirut and the eastern city of Baalbek, areas where the Iran-backed Hezbollah maintains a strong presence. Lebanese authorities said at least 217 people had been killed in those attacks.

At the same time, Iran launched missiles toward Gulf states, with Saudi Arabia reporting that it intercepted a ballistic missile aimed at Prince Sultan Air Base, which hosts US personnel.

The escalating conflict has also shaken global energy markets. Benchmark Brent Crude surged to $92.69 per barrel amid fears of supply disruptions linked to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil shipments.
