-

31st July 2024 TDI: Ismail Haniya, political chief of Hamas, was killed in a missile attack on his residence in Tehran, where he was to attend the inauguration of Iran’s new president Masoud Pezeshkian.

In a statement, Hamas has said that Haniyah was killed in “a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran”. Saudi Arabian news outlet Al Hadath reported that the senior Hamas leader was killed in a guided missile attack on his residence around 2:00 local time.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard affiliate news Fars reported that the Hamas leader was stationed in a residence for veterans in the north of Tehran and he was killed by “a projectile from the air”.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman says Hniyah’s “blood will never be wasted”.

Meanwhile, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa condemns the assassination of Hamas’ political leader. In a statement, he also “called on the factions, forces and the sons of our Palestinian people to further national unity and steadfastness in the face of the occupation and its crimes.

Reacting to the assassination, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov called the killing “an absolutely unacceptable political assassination.” “This is all very wrong. This is an absolutely not acceptable political assassination, and it would push for further escalation of tension.”

Haniyeh was from Gaza but had lived in Qatar for several years.
