Ireland Ready to Support Rehabilitation of Flood Affected Population: Envoy

Islamabad (TDI): In a meeting with Pakistan’s Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, at the Parliament House, the Ambassador of Ireland to Pakistan, Mary O’Neill, said that her country is ready to support the rehabilitation of the flood-affected population.

She expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and property caused by the ongoing floods in Pakistan’s North and Punjab mainly.

Highlighting the devastation caused by floods, Speaker Sadiq said that Pakistan, despite contributing only 0.6 percent to global carbon emissions, is among the most severely affected countries by climate change.

He added that the destruction from the ongoing floods has surpassed the devastation caused by the 2022 deluge. “Torrential rains and the release of water from across the border have triggered large-scale destruction in Pakistan” he said.

Speaker Sadiq also emphasized that parliamentary diplomacy can play an instrumental role in addressing shared challenges, particularly in the areas of climate resilience and disaster management.

He underscored the importance of strengthening parliamentary linkages between the two countries, saying that such exchanges are vital for fostering bilateral cooperation.

Ambassador O’Neill lauded the role of the Pakistani diaspora in Ireland, particularly their notable contributions in the health sector, describing their services as commendable.
