Iraqi Consulate Reopens in Karachi after 23 Years

Karachi (TDI): Consul General of Iraq in Karachi, Maher Mjhid Jejan, has expressed the Iraqi Consulate’s strong commitment to acting as a bridge between the business communities of Iraq and Pakistan, with a focus on promoting bilateral trade, investment, and tourism.

During a meeting at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, he stated that the reopening of the Iraqi Consulate in Karachi after twenty-three years would not only enhance long-standing Islamic and cultural ties but also promote increased collaboration in trade and tourism.

Jejan assured that the Consulate is available round the clock to help and facilitate the business community in the city.

He proposed the formation of a joint working group to explore avenues for trade and investment collaboration between Pakistan and Iraq, adding that the consulate would stay in regular contact with the KCCI.

He said Iraq is experiencing swift development and presents vast opportunities for trade and investment.

He also urged the Pakistani business community to visit Iraq and witness the peaceful and stable environment firsthand, dispelling misconceptions about the country’s security situation.

He further mentioned that people can now move freely through Iraq without restrictions.

The consul general said that Iraq has introduced new investment regulations to attract foreign investors.

He mentioned that these laws would be shared with KCCI to help the Pakistani business community explore potential opportunities.

Jejan praised the high quality of Pakistani products and expressed confidence that exporters and investors would increasingly engage with the Iraqi market.

He also suggested establishing a sea-link between Karachi and Basra to boost logistics and bring business communities of both countries closer.

He said that business attestation services have started at the Consulate in Karachi.

The Consul General added that visa operations are likely to begin within a month, following the arrival of a dedicated visa team from Iraq.

Meanwhile, he noted, business visa applications can be processed through the Iraqi Embassy in Islamabad or via the electronic visa facility, making access easier for Pakistani citizens.
