Iranian President’s Visit to Pakistan Delayed by a Week

Islamabad (TDI): Pakistan has announced new dates for the official two-day visit of the Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, to the country. Scheduled earlier for tomorrow, July 26th, President Masoud will now arrive on August 2nd.

Absence of Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, from the country has been cited as the official reason for this deferral. Dar is currently in the United States for an elaborate visit, which also includes a meeting with the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.

Dar’s presence is important and required because the Iranian President will bring along the country’s foreign, interior, and trade ministers. The news of the visit first emerged earlier this week when Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi spoke on telephone with his Iranian counterpart, on Monday.

Masoud’s visit is the second highest-level visit to Pakistan following last year’s April visit of the now-deceased President Ebrahim Raisi. This might be a continuation of the agenda that was interrupted by the sudden death of Raisi.

A number of MoUs are expected during Masoud’s visit, including of course trade cooperation and expansion. Cultural exchanges, border management, energy cooperation are other likely areas in which MoUs are expected.

Relations between Pakistan and Iran have come a long way since Raisi’s last year visit; less by intention and more by circumstance. Raisi’s visit brought calm after both sides exchanged strikes on each other’s bordering regions in January, 2024.

Since then, border tensions have relatively remained cooler but regional dynamics have been chaotic for Iran, re a direct military confrontation with Israel last month – culminating into the “12-day war.”

Interestingly, after a brief confrontation with India in May, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made a stop in Iran during his regional diplomacy and outreach tour. Iran was his second stop after Turkiye and before Azerbaijan.

Both countries have increasingly looked to each other during their confrontational episodes with long-time rivals. Masoud’s visit is as much that as it is about trade, energy, counter-terrorism, and border management.
