Islamabad (TDI): Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Chief of Defense Forces and Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan, Field Marshal Asim Munir, this morning (Saturday), after landing in Islamabad last night.
What initially looked like a second round of United States-Iran talks is a visit by FM Abbas Araghchi, who is accompanied by Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi and Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei, among others.
On the Pakistani side, the meeting was also attended by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, and the focus of the talks was the ongoing diplomatic efforts, spearheaded by Pakistan, amid fragile ceasefire conditions.
Araghchi arrived in Islamabad on Friday night carrying Tehran’s formal response to proposals previously conveyed by the United States through Pakistani mediation. This is the very response Trump referred to when he extended the ceasefire hours before it was set to expire on Wednesday.

At the airport, the Iranian FM and his small delegation were received by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar alongside Field Marshal Munir. The FM is scheduled to have a meeting with Dar as well.
Before departing Tehran, Araghchi clarified his trip is “to closely coordinate with our partners on bilateral matters and consult on regional developments.”
“Our neighbors are our priority,” he added as he told this trip is not just limited to Pakistan but he will also travel to Muscat and Moscow in the same tier.
However, the visit takes place at a sensitive time as the standoff with the US is very much in place and as Tehran made clear that no direct negotiations are taking place during Araghchi’s visit.

Diplomatic momentum has somewhat accelerated as the Iranian FM’s arrival in Islamabad was quickly followed by a White House statement confirming that Steve Witkoff and David Kushner are also embarking on Pakistan visit.
White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, confirmed the visit noting that the envoys would engage in direct, Pakistan-intermediated talks with the Iranian delegation; which contradicts the position maintained by Iran.
She said “The Iranians reached out, as the president called on them to do, and asked for this in-person conversation,” adding the US leadership remains on standby for updates as the mediation process continues in Islamabad.
The current phase of negotiations follows the first round of direct talks held in Islamabad on April 11-12. While those discussions concluded without a formal agreement, they successfully prevented a complete diplomatic breakdown and kept communication channels open.
Since then, exchanges have continued indirectly through Pakistan. Both sides have been adjusting their positions while navigating the complexities of the current ceasefire, which has been extended indefinitely by Trump. Meanwhile Islamabad is both hopeful and prepared for a second round of talks.
