Iran-Singapore vows to enhance ties at 19th ACD Meeting

Tehran, 24 June 2024 (TDI): On Sunday, Singaporean Special Envoy Ong Keng Yong and Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri met to discuss enhancing bilateral ties and regional collaboration. The side meeting took place on the sidelines of the 19th Foreign Ministers’ Meeting of the Asian Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) in Tehran.

Iran’s acting foreign minister also emphasized the need to conclude current agreements and memorandums of understanding between the two countries. He expressed Iran’s willingness to strengthen trade and economic ties with Singapore.

Ali Bagheri underlined Iran’s dedication to eradicating “unilateralism and authoritarianism” from the world. Furthermore, he stressed the significance of consolidating ties amongst regional groups like the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and ACD.

The Singaporean envoy reaffirmed his nation’s commitment to advancing both bilateral relations and global collaboration with Iran. In addition, he underlined the significance of increased communication and reciprocal visits between officials of both states for enhanced diplomatic ties.

Both parties committed to using their current resources to strengthen their bonds and advance shared goals. This meeting indicates both countries’ shared commitment to multilateralism and regional cooperation, and it is a major step in improving ties between Iran and Singapore.

Asian Cooperation Dialogue

The ACD is a pan-Asian forum that was first introduced in Thailand in 2002. In addition, Kuwait serves as home to its headquarters. The forum comprises 35 Asian members, with Iran assuming the charge of its head at the end of 2023.

The goal of the 19th ACD Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is to improve member states’ collaboration and strengthen strategic collaboration and connections with the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). Maximizing ACD potential and cultivating partnerships are among the agenda items.

According to the ACD strategy 2021–2030, cooperation in digital technology, tourism, sustainable growth, trade, and investment are also the goals. The 19th Foreign Ministers’ Meeting aims to strengthen Asian countries’ unity and regional growth.
