Foreign Ministers of Qatar and Iran hold talks over the phone call

Tehran, 23 July 2022 (TDI): The Foreign Minister of Iran, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, and Qatar’s counterpart, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, held a phone meeting. The two dignitaries discussed the latest developments regarding negotiations on lifting sanctions.

Both countries’ Foreign Ministers discussed the latest developments in the indirect talks between Iran and the United States. This is over a possible revival of the 2015 nuclear deal, officially known as the (JCPOA) Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

The Iranian Foreign Minister insisted that Tehran is determined to reach a “good, robust and lasting” deal. He also underlined that it is necessary for the US to avoid making excessive demands.

In addition, Amir Abdollahian also urged the US to put aside excessive demands and act realistically to resurrect the agreement.

As a result, Qatar hosted indirect talks between Iran and the US on June 28-29. The European Union envoy, Enrique Mora, mediated the talks. The EU envoy played the role of a shuttle between the American and Iranian sides.

In light of this, both Foreign Ministers reviewed developments in nuclear negotiations. They also reviewed the latest regional developments and a number of issues of common interest.

Qatar’s chief diplomat said his country seeks to support all parties to revive the nuclear deal. He further said all parties should reach a fair agreement while taking into account the concerns of all parties.

Iran-Qatar relations

Qatar and Iran have close ties. While Qatar has an embassy in Tehran, Iran has one in Doha. Both countries are members of the Non-Aligned Movement and the Organisation of Islamic Conference.

Unlike other Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia or the UAE, Qatar generally does not criticize Iran’s domestic and foreign activities.

The two nations’ extensive economic ties have an impact on their diplomatic ties, particularly in the oil and gas sectors.
Oil from an Iranian related field accounts for a sizable amount of Qatar’s oil supply. The largest natural gas field in the world is jointly controlled by Iran and Qatar.
