New Delhi (TDI): India has warned that potential new US tariffs targeting countries buying Russian oil could affect bilateral relations, while reaffirming its commitment to securing energy supplies from diverse sources.
The warning came after the US House of Representatives passed a sweeping sanctions and tariff bill aimed at increasing economic pressure on Russia over its war in Ukraine.
The legislation, which now goes to President Donald Trump for consideration, would authorize tariffs of up to 100% on imports from China, India and other countries to discourage purchases of Russian energy.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs said New Delhi had taken note of the legislation and had raised concerns with US officials in recent months. The ministry said India had “very clearly articulated” the potential consequences for bilateral relations and global energy markets.
New Delhi remains “firmly committed” to ensuring energy security for its population and will continue to source oil from multiple suppliers based on market conditions, the ministry said.

“The Indian side has also made clear its determination to take all necessary measures to protect its trade and economic interests,” the ministry added, saying the government would work with trade and industry bodies to address the potential impact of the legislation.
India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, is among the major buyers of Russian crude. The purchases have provided an important source of revenue for Moscow since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and faced extensive Western sanctions.

New Delhi has repeatedly defended its purchases of Russian oil, arguing that the country’s large population and growing economy require secure, affordable and reliable energy supplies.
Indian refiners have already arranged oil supplies for September and October, including Russian crude, according to sources familiar with the matter.
