Washington, 11 January 2022 (TDI): The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, announced today that she plans to appoint Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas as the Economic Counsellor and as director of the research department (RES). She describes him as an excellent macroeconomist and practitioner.

He will formally start his duties part-time from the 24th of January, as he completes a period of training after which he will transition to a full-time position beginning April 1st.

Gourinchas’ Education and Career
Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas boasts an impressive list of credentials. He received his BA in Physics from École Polytechnique. Then went on to complete his MA in Economics from École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales.
Gourinchas received his MA in Engineering from École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées. He completed his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1996. Gourinchas has had a renowned career as an educationist.
He joined the University of Berkeley in 2003 and is currently the Faculty Director of the Clausen Centre for International Business & Policy. He was also an Assistant Professor of Economics at Stanford and Princeton.
From 2012 to 2013, he was a member of the French Council of Economic Advisors to the Prime Minister. Currently, he is the Program Director of International Finance and Macroeconomics at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER).
Additionally, from 2009-2016 Gourinchas was the editor in chief of the IMF Economic Review while also being a visiting scholar.
