IFRC MENA continue in supporting YRCS

Sana’a, 4 July 2022 (TDI): The Regional Director of the International Federation of Red Cross and Crescent Societies in the Middle East and North Africa (IFRC MENA), Hossam Elsharkawi had a meeting with the SG of Yemen Red Crescent Society (YRCS), Fouad Al-Mukhtabi.

Hossam Elsharkawi stated that IFRC Middle East and North Africa will continue supporting the YRC. Regarding urgent needs in Yemen, YRC will be assisted by developing the capacity building of responding in less time.

In growing and strengthening YRC as a regional humanitarian agency, related services such as medical, health, and social development will be provided to communities quickly and effectively.

Need for Humanitarian assistance in the Yemen crisis

Yemen is significantly affected by the crisis in Ukraine. As a result of the Ukrainian crisis, it has affected the accessibility of humanitarian funds.

Yemen faces one of the greatest humanitarian crises, likewise, the world’s great assistance missions are in Yemen.

Due to more than seven years of armed conflict in Yemen, there are tens of thousands of civilian casualties and 4 million people displaced.

In addition, fears and stigma associated with COVID-19 have discouraged people to seek treatment for other health concerns and from accessing other services.

Measures introduced to reduce the spread of COVID-19 have led to interruptions in various vital services. Especially, nutrition, protection as well as education.

The effects of the crisis are evident in malnutrition, disease outbreaks, civilian casualties, and displacements in Yemen. Together with the collapsing economy, looming famine, and the reversal of the country’s past development gains.

MENA Situation

The Middle East and North Africa region continues to deal with several complicated crises, wars, and displaced people. The demands of impacted communities are becoming more severe and extensive.

Also, the impact of the conflict in Ukraine has been reported as a crisis multiplier in the Middle East and North Africa.

The MENA region continues to face numerous crises, conflicts, and displacement.

The needs of affected populations are rising in severity. As well as aggravated by macroeconomic decline, chronic underdevelopment, climate change, natural disasters, and diseases.

More than 55 million people across the region need humanitarian assistance, including more than twelve million internally displaced people.
