Geneva, 17 August 2022 (TDI): The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Disaster Law has launched World Disaster Laws. World Disaster Laws is the first and biggest digital database of domestic disaster laws from around the world.

World Disaster Laws was designed due to the generous assistance of the legal firm White & Case LLP. This online collection shows the disaster laws of over a hundred countries. Moreover, a separate page included offers a summary of each country’s primary disaster law.

Notably, World Disaster Laws also include a search option that permits users to narrow down the information by using filters. Hence, users can do a geographically refined search to identify global, regional, and sub-regional tendencies.

All of the mentioned laws in World Disaster Laws is accessible in the IFRC Collection of Disaster Law. Additionally, it also includes case law, publications from international organizations along with materials from different actors and treaties.

Statement of Disaster Law Officer:

According to IFRC Senior Disaster Law Officer, Rachel Macleod, rising natural catastrophes and health crises disaster law is a developing and fast-changing field of law.

Law, regulations, and contingency plans are the foundation of how we prevent, prepare, respond, and recover from disasters and emergencies. These documents need to be readily accessible by governments, the humanitarian sector, and academics.

The search function of World Disaster Laws allows us to identify trends and gaps in disaster law. For example, using the World Disaster Laws search, we can see that disaster recovery is a topic that is often neglected in domestic disaster laws, with only 16 per cent of featured countries having the main disaster law that addresses disaster recovery in detail, compared to 75 per cent for disaster response.
