Beijing, 31 August 2024 (TDI): On the 40th anniversary of China’s membership in the International Atomic Energy Agency, Director of the IAEA’s Office of Public Information and Communication Sophie Boutaud de la Combe praised Beijing’s significant role in advancing the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Speaking at a media event during her visit to China, Boutaud de la Combe highlighted China’s support for the IAEA and its contributions to global nuclear safety and eco-friendly energy development.

China’s recent approval of five new nuclear power projects, including 11 units utilizing advanced third- and fourth-generation technologies, underscores its commitment to expanding its nuclear energy capacity.

The projects represent an investment exceeding 240 billion yuan ($33.3 billion).

China currently operates 56 nuclear units, with 28 more under construction and 18 approved, positioning itself as a global leader in nuclear energy expansion.

Boutaud de la Combe commended China’s efforts in reducing carbon emissions and pollution while promoting the development of nuclear power in other countries.

She noted that China’s expertise is instrumental in helping nations build and operate nuclear plants efficiently and safely.

The IAEA official also praised China’s efforts to raise public awareness about nuclear energy, highlighting the role of the China Nuclear Energy Science and Technology Museum in educating the public.

Looking ahead, the IAEA aims to deepen its partnership with the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA) and promote best practices in nuclear energy use and communication, she said.

Boutaud de la Combe added that the agency values its collaboration with China and anticipates further advancements in nuclear technology and international cooperation.

In June, Liu Jing, deputy director of CAEA, affirmed China’s commitment to openness and cooperation with the IAEA, emphasizing China’s role in enhancing global nuclear safety and development.

Pan Jianming, Secretary of the Board of Directors of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), also noted the company’s significant contributions to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and its support for a shared future in nuclear energy development.
