Director General of IAEA, Rafael Mariano Grossi said, “We are finishing our long-awaited visit to Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant. I have just completed the first tour in the key areas that we wanted to see the first approach to the whole facility.”
Further, he added that “Of course, there is a lot more to do so my team is staying on and more importantly we are establishing our continued presence from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).”
IAEA’s mission to ZNPP
Director General of IAEA, Rafael Mariano Grossi, along with his team arrived in Ukraine on 29 August for the IAEA Support and Assistance Mission to Zaporizhzhya (ISAMZ).
During his mission at ZNPP, Rafael Grossi said, “We must protect the safety and security of Ukraine’s and Europe’s biggest nuclear facility.
The IAEA mission will help ensure nuclear safety and security at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant and undertake vital safeguards activities.”
He emphasized that the mission clarified the situation and assisted in addressing any conflicting reports regarding the facility’s status, use, and level of damage.
The Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant is run by Ukrainian people despite Russian soldiers being in possession of it since March.
The site has experienced frequent shelling this month, and last week it briefly lost contact with its final remaining operable 750 kV external power cable.
