Honduran athlete wins gold medal in taekwondo at Costa Rica Open 2022

Tegucigalpa, 29 August 2022 (TDI): A taekwondo athlete from Honduras, Andrea Carias, wins the first gold medal for her country, on the second day of the Costa Rica Open 2022.

Andrea Carias is one of the most recognized athletes in taekwondo in Honduras. Carias with her participation in the +59kg cadet category of taekwondo achieved the fifth medal for the Honduran delegation.

Previously, the Honduras delegation at the Costa Rica Open 2022 had won Silver medals with the Olympic Keila Ávila in +73 kilograms and bronze with Josselyn Molina in -73kg, and Nelson Salvador and Bill Tabora won bronze medals in Poomsae.

The group of athletes from Honduras is made up of 26 athletes in the Children, Cadets, Youth, and Seniors categories.

The Costa Rica Open 2022 is considered the most important Pan-American event of a global open nature in Central America. It is one of the most successful events in the world that opens the doors for children, youth, and adults to compete in taekwondo.

Andrea Carias (Previous Achievements)

Andrea Carias is a ninth-grade student enrolled at a school in the country’s capital, Tegucigalpa. The young athlete from Honduras has been coached by Daniel Espinoza for international competitions.

At the 2022 USA President Cup, the Honduran athlete, Andrea Carias, won the gold medal in taekwondo in the cadet category.

For the gold medal, Andrea Carias outplayed her opponent from the Dominican Republic. The 2022 USA President Cup was held at Hyatt Regency in the US city of Jacksonville in Florida.

At the Pan Am Series II Taekwondo Championship 2022 in Costa Rica, Andrea Carías competed in the cadet category of up to 14 years old and achieved the gold medal. This competition comprised 739 athletes from 29 countries.

With this win, Carias earned the right to participate in the XIX Pan American Games from October 20 to November 5, 2023, in Santiago de Chile.
