Heavy Rain Expected in Sindh

-

Karachi, 31 August 2024 (TDI): The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert, noting that the cyclone Asna, moving away from Sindh’s coastal belt, is now positioned at about 230km from Karachi, 180km from Ormara and 300km from Gwadar.

The system is forecasted to track west-southwestward toward Balochistan and then Oman. The cyclone is likely to weaken and dissipate over the sea, with no threat of landfall, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The Met Office predicts rough sea conditions with winds reaching 60 to 70 km/h. Fishermen in Sindh are advised to stay ashore on Sunday, while those in Balochistan should avoid deep-sea activities until Monday.

NDMA’s Warning

The NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) has warned of potential coastal and pluvial flooding in low-lying areas of Sindh.

Heavy rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms are expected in Karachi and several districts in Sindh, including Badin, Thatta, Sajawal, Hyderabad, and Tando Muhammad Khan, as well as in Hub, Lasbella, Awaran, Kech, and Gwadar in Balochistan.

Karachi experienced rain overnight, affecting areas such as II Chundrigar Road, Saddar, Burns Road, and parts of Defense, Korangi, and Sharea Faisal.

The traffic police urge drivers to exercise caution, drive slowly, and avoid sudden braking due to slippery roads.

Residents are advised to remain alert, avoid seaside areas, and follow local authority guidance.

Thunderstorms may increase the risk of lightning and utility disruptions. The NDMA has instructed all relevant departments to prepare for potential flooding and adverse weather conditions.
