Guatemala City, 23 August 2023 (TDI): August 22 marked the 177th anniversary of the establishment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minex) of Guatemala.
The Foreign Ministry underlined its resolve to continue working for Guatemalans via social media.
Since its inception, Minex has strived to preserve the interests of Guatemala and all of its countrymen through consular action and diplomacy based on fundamental ideals of peace, respect, and sovereignty protection.
On the anniversary, a Thanksgiving mass was held at Mexico City’s Basilica of Santa Maria de Guadalupe.
Foreign Ministry of Guatemala
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minex), part of the Executive Branch, is responsible for developing policies and enforcing the legislative framework in Guatemala’s international relations with other countries.
The Foreign Ministry can also grant Guatemalan nationality, ensure compliance with the Migration Law, demarcate and preserve the borders of the national territory, and negotiate and safeguard international treaties and agreements.
It defends the country’s interests, among other functions which have been assigned to it by the Executive Branch Law and other legislation of the country; it is currently part of the National Security System.
The Minex is in charge of the programs that assist countrymen residing outside of the country via the consular network.

Diplomatic Relations of Guatemala
Guatemala maintains diplomatic relations with 161 countries, has 42 resident embassies overseas and 63 concurrences from 23 permanent embassies abroad.
In addition, it has established diplomatic ties with 31 countries through its Mission in New York to the United Nations.
It also has four missions to international organizations: UN New York, UN Geneva, the Organization of American States, and the World Trade Organization.
Through the Mobile Consulates, the Guatemalan government has provided 102,630 services to its citizens since 2020.
This government strategy makes it possible to bring attention to Guatemalans living in the United States on weekends who cannot go to a consulate during the week for various reasons.
