Today is Throne Day in the Kingdom of Morocco, marking the 23rd anniversary of the accession of King Mohammed VI. On this occasion, Guatemala expressed its solidarity with the African country.
“The Feast of His Majesty King Mohamed VI’s Enthronement” is celebrated by Moroccans every year on 30th July. The celebration is made to promote loyalty to the King who unites the Moroccan people to bring them together.
Moreover, the Moroccan government typically plans nationwide celebrations in Morocco. Besides, the Moroccan diplomatic mission chiefs also organize celebrations all around the world.
Guatemala & Morocco: Bilateral Ties
Morocco’s geographic location and prominence within its geopolitical environment allow the country to take the lead in advancing South-South cooperation and peace and security.
Guatemala and Morocco share a strong bilateral bond spanning fifty years. Guatemala expressed its support for Morocco’s stance in the Guerguerat, a village located in the far South West of the Sahara.
Guerguerat is the major border post that connects Western Sahara with Mauritania. It is situated in the south of the Tropic of Cancer.
There was an escalation of tension in the area, at the end of 2016, between the Saharawi Liberation Army and Moroccan troops, which finished with the retrieval of the region in its entirety by Saharawi troops in 2020.
Guerguerat intervention in 2020 and the Moroccan Autonomy Plan were very important to the Government of Morocco. Likewise, within the context above, Guatemala has shown consistent support for the Moroccan sovereignty over its provinces in the South.
