History of Revolution Day
Revolution Day is a public holiday that is celebrated in Egypt to commemorate its military coup. It is observed on 23rd July every year. On this day, in 1952, the Egyptian Military ended the establishment of a republic and the monarchy.
The Muhammad Ali Dynasty emerged as the Kingdom of Egypt after the British granted independence to Egypt, in 1922. However, the ensuing discontent with the King’s rule eventually led to the revolution.
The coup took place by the Free Officers led by General Muhammad Naguib. The group was called the clandestine group. Gamal Abdel Nasser had formed the organization of ex-army officers in 1949 to plot a coup against King Farouk’s government.
In 1952, the clandestine group successfully overthrew the then king paving the way for democracy. Subsequently, significant land reforms in the country were introduced to reallocate land owned by the rich to the underprivileged.
Moreover, the revolution paved the way for fighting corruption, and accelerated industrialization, along with advancing women’s rights and the ability to vote.
The incumbent Egyptian President also delivers a public statement to commemorate the National Day. Likewise, celebrations commence a day before 23rd July. This is because the military coup d’état began the evening before July 23rd, 1952.
