After not airing last year as penance for its historic diversity problem, this year it got aired with the explicit mandate to inform the industry that lessons had been learned.
List of winners
If there was a theme to the ceremony, it was one of reinvention and renewal. Several of the winners described themselves as having been given golden opportunities after being cut out of or overlooked by a company that did not recognize their abilities.
The list of honorees was diverse. On the film side, Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” took home leading three awards with Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, Best Supporting Actor, Musical or Comedy for Colin Farrell, and Best Screenplay.
A fan favorite “Everything Everywhere All at Once” nabbed both Best Actress, Musical, or Comedy for Michelle Yeoh and Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan.
While Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” won two of the biggies with Best Motion Picture, Drama, and Best Director.
Meanwhile, “The White Lotus” took home two trophies for Best Limited Series/Anthology/TV Movie and Best Supporting Actress in the same category. Additionally, a Telugu movie RRR created history by winning a Golden Globe.
The film’s catchy musical number, Naatu Naatu, received the award for the best original song, beating heavyweights like Taylor Swift. The song was filmed in front of Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky’s official residence in 2021.
It is pertinent to note that Volodymyr Zelenskyy also made an appeared-on video message. He briefed viewers on his country’s cause as it continues to confront an existential battle with Russia.
