New York, 6 August 2022 (TDI): UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday affirmed the world body’s one-China policy. The statement was made on August 3, as United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s Taiwan visit has created tensions.
He clarified the position at a press conference for the launch of a report of his Global Crisis Response Group over the Ukraine crisis.

He further stated, “Our position is very clear. We abide by General Assembly resolutions, by the one-China policy. It is the orientation that we have in everything we do”.
The UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758 in 1971, which decides to restore the lawful rights of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in the United Nations. It also significantly recognizes the representatives of the PRC government as the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations.
Affirmation of ITU
On August 4, The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) affirmed its observance of the guidance incorporated in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 2758.
ITU also affirms its compliance with Resolution 693 of the ITU Administrative Council on the representation of China in ITU.
Countries joining the affirmation
Governments of more than 12 countries joined the reaffirmation of their adherence to the one-China principle.
They voiced discontent and strong condemnation of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s provocative visit to Taiwan island.
Significantly, a slew of countries joined after the leaders and foreign ministers of Russia, Pakistan, Iran, and North Korea expressed their growing concerns over Pelosi’s visit.

ASEAN states
Southeast Asian foreign ministers have also been seeking ways to help calm rising tensions over Taiwan at regional talks with the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ statement.
The ASEAN Member States also reiterated their support for their respective one-China principle.
Remarks from Arab League
The Arab League also declared its support for the one-China principle. The league’s stance “is based on upholding China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Secretary-general of the Arab League, Hossam Zaki further discussed the league’s stance. It also supports upholding China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and firmly adhering to the one-China principle.
