Islamabad (TDI): Dr. Abid Qaiyum Suleri, Executive Director of the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) and member of the COP-29 Advisory Committee, has made a heartfelt appeal to the global community to rally behind the COP-29 Truce initiative. This initiative, inspired by the Olympic Truce, aims to promote human solidarity in the face of the escalating climate crisis. The COP-29 Truce is a call for a one-month global ceasefire during the conference, slated to take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024.
As the only South Asian expert on the COP-29 Advisory Committee, Dr. Suleri emphasized that the conference presents a historic opportunity for nations to unite and address the climate change challenge. He stressed that global warming and climate change demand unwavering resolve from every nation, as they threaten the very survival of our planet . The COP-29 Truce initiative seeks to limit greenhouse gas emissions, environmental damage, and highlight the non-political nature of combating climate change.
Dr. Suleri underscored that the fundamental message of COP-29 is that humanity can transcend political differences to save the planet. “Amidst conflicts spreading and rising, this ideal is more critical Executive ever. It is a unique chance to bridge divides and find paths toward lasting peace,” he said. The SDPI Executive Director also emphasized the need for undivided attention and cooperation during climate talks.

The COP-29 conference will build upon the agenda set at COP-28 in Dubai, focusing on transitioning away from fossil fuels to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. With over half of the global population set to participate in elections this year, the conference presents a critical opportunity for nations to prioritize peace and climate action.
As Dr. Suleri aptly put it, “Let the COP Truce serve as a symbol of human solidarity. Let’s unite for a safer, more prosperous, and sustainable future for all. Only by prioritizing peace and climate action can we ensure a liveable planet for future generations.”
