Glasgow, 22 November 2021 (TDI): At the COP26 summit held in Glasgow, it made a deal that aims at halting dangerous climate change. The Glasgow Climate Pact is an important climate agreement that aims to reduce carbon emissions from coal.
The agreement calls on countries to reduce their emissions and provides more funding for developing nations to adapt to climate change. The government has not fulfilled its pledge to reduce the temperature rise to 1.5C.
Glasgow’s COP26 implications for business
This summit also highlighted the benefits for business and society of reuniting post-Covid. Whereas, the Glasgow Climate Pact failed to meet its expectations for reducing carbon emissions and limiting global temperature rise.
For the former United Nations territory, on the north banks of Clyde, the last week was chaotic. As many of the townships had to be demolished, they then returned the area under the control of the UK Cabinet Office.
Moreover, Kathleen Warden, the Scottish Event Campus’ conference director was receiving messages every week from clients and other conference venues to express how good Glasgow was looking.
Nearly all the countries represented in the summit and heads of government came from all countries to Glasgow.
Social business beings
After 20 months of cancellations and uncertainty, the Scottish Event Campus bookings are rebinding after temporary transformation into Louis Jordan NHS hospital.
Kathleen Warden stated that in normal times, at least 80% of conference activity is made up by “associations”. These can include philatelists and dental hygienists.
There is nothing like the chemistry and interaction created when scientists, technologists, and doctors come together and share their knowledge.
Professor John Lennon at Glasgow Caledonian University is an expert in travel and tourism. He acknowledged that work has also changed in the modern world. He said that people are increasingly working remotely and will continue to do so. However, employers must be more proactive in bringing them together when necessary to inform, inspire, and manage them.
It may be more important than ever to focus on team building. Participants will engage in practical, social, and enjoyable activities instead of just attending conferences. It is expensive, but you can think of it as an office water cooler, he added.
Improvements
Glasgow COP26 summit brought some improvements
• New NDCs and sectoral initiatives have (slightly) reduced the emissions gap to achieve global warming of 1.5°
• However, even with these new initiatives, CO2 emissions will remain far too high to limit global warming
