Germany reopens its Libyan embassy after 8 years

Tripoli, 10 September 2021 (TDI): The German Embassy in Libya resumed its work on Thursday in the capital, Tripoli, after about 8 years of closure. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas inaugurated the German embassy in the presence of Libyan Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Khalil Issa, German Ambassador in Libya Michael Unmacht, and a number of diplomatic officials.

At the opening ceremony, the Secretary of State welcomed the visit of the German Foreign Minister and his accompanying delegation to Tripoli and expressed appreciation for this important step, which will strengthen friendly and cooperative relations between Libya and Germany and encourage other diplomatic missions to return to their jobs from Libya.

Undersecretary underlined the willingness of the Government of National Unity to provide all the necessary structures for the work of the German diplomatic mission and all diplomatic missions in Libya, hoping the consular department of the embassy to provide visa issuance services and opportunities for citizens to enter Germany as soon as possible.

The German FM reiterated his country’s support for Libya and the political process in cooperation with the United Nations and the international community. Heiko Maas stressed that Germany is a committed partner of Libya.
