Islamabad (TDI Special): Ambassador Alfred Grannas is the incumbent German envoy to Pakistan, with a diplomatic career that extends over three decades
Hailing from Rosenheim, Bavaria, he joined the German Foreign Office in 1990 after a notable career in law.
A law and history graduate of Munich University, Ambassador Grannas began his professional journey as a judge and district attorney in Bavaria before transitioning to diplomacy.
His diplomatic career, however, began with roles as UNESCO Desk Officer and First Secretary at the German Embassy in Lima, Peru.
During the mid-1990s, he served in the Cabinet of German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel, strengthening parliamentary relations and honing his skills in international diplomacy.
Ambassador Grannas has a remarkable record of service in peace and conflict-resolution missions.
He worked in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo as Chief of Cabinet, supporting international peace operations, and later as Counsellor for Security Council Affairs at Germany’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.
His experience has been instrumental in shaping Germany’s global diplomatic stance on peace and security.
In Berlin, he led key initiatives, including the Humanitarian Assistance Task Force and change management efforts at the Foreign Office.
From 2018 to 2022, he served as Germany’s Ambassador to Norway, reinforcing Germany’s bilateral relationships in Europe.
Now, as the German Ambassador to Pakistan since 2022, Ambassador Grannas has dedicated his tenure to advancing the historical ties between Germany and Pakistan.

Ambassador Grannas recently addressed a distinguished gathering on German Unity Day at the German Embassy in Islamabad.
The event, celebrating the reunification of East and West Germany on October 3, 1990, welcomed a diverse group of attendees, including German business leaders, diplomats, Pakistani officials, and representatives from humanitarian and media sectors.
In his remarks, Ambassador Grannas reflected on Germany’s journey of reunification and its enduring commitment to international unity, expressing hope for stronger ties between Germany and Pakistan in the years ahead.
