Future of SCO ‘Full of Hope’: Official

Beijing (TDI): The future of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is full of hope, growth and solidarity, Zhang Ming, the outgoing secretary-general of the SCO said at his farewell event last week.

“History will prove the strong vitality of the Shanghai Spirit,” Zhang Ming said while addressing the event.

He added that member countries will face heavy responsibilities on the way forward.

China currently holds the rotating presidency of the SCO and is set to host the 25th SCO Summit next year.

Speaking on the occasion, China’s assistant foreign minister, Liu Bin said that the country was ready to take this opportunity to act on the presidency slogan, ‘Upholding the Shanghai Spirit: SCO on the Move’.

“China is ready to join hands with all member states to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders,” he added.

He added that Beijing was willing to improve the organization’s mechanism to address security threats and other challenges, as well as draw a blueprint of the SCO Development Strategy through 2035, Liu added.

Zhang took office on Jan 1, 2022, for a term of three years. During this term, the SCO inducted two new member states and eight dialogue partners. The organization now has 10 member states, two observer nations and 14 dialogue partners.
