In a press release, The Freedom Flotilla Coalition has announced sailing the second ship ‘Handala’ on July 13, 2025 to end the illegal blockade of Gaza.
This announcement came days after the previous sailing of “Madleen,” which was boarding activist Greta Thunberg alongside other activists who were ultimately captured, before reaching Gaza, and deported by the Israeli occupation forces.
Like Madleen, Handala will be boarding activists and will be carrying life-saving humanitarian aid for the children of Gaza.Â
What is the Freedom Flotilla Coalition?
Freedom Flotilla Coalition is a grassroots people to people solidarity movement composed of campaigns and initiatives from different parts of the world, working together to end the illegal Israeli blockade of Gaza.
It was formed in 2010 with the collaboration of activists from across regions coming together, governed by the principle of non-violence and non-violent resistance, to support the dignity and humanity of Palestinians.
Its goals include breaking Israel’s more than 17 year of illegal and inhumane blockade of Gaza strip, educating people across the globe about blockade of Gaza, condemning and publicizing the complicity of other governments and global actors in enabling the blockade, and to respond to the cry of Palestinians.Â
Why the name “Handala”?
This ship has a special significance as it takes its name from the Palestinian cartoon figure Handala – a barefoot Palestinian refugee child who turns his back on injustice and vowed not to turn around until Palestine is free.
So this boat signifies and carries his spirit and that of every child in Palestine who is denied the basic human rights.
Also, this ship has already sailed to ports across Northern Europe and the UK, breaking through media blockades, educating people on its cause through press events, art installations, and political education.Â
