Taiyuan, 31 August 2024 (TDI): Parliamentary leaders and representatives from 32 developing countries visited a smart farm in Shanxi Province, northern China, to experience firsthand advancements in agricultural modernization.
This visit was part of the 2024 Inter-regional Seminar on the Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Parliaments of Developing Countries, co-hosted by China’s National People’s Congress and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
At the Jinzhong National Agriculture High-tech Zone Smart Farm Demonstration Base, the visitors were introduced to various agricultural products and technologies.
They explored the disease-resistant qualities of different seeds and observed the integration of smart systems such as the intelligent water and fertilizer management system that allows a single person to manage up to 10,000 square meters of farmland.

He highlighted the potential for partnerships between Kenya and China to advance agricultural modernization in Africa.
Lesotho’s National Assembly Speaker, Tlohang Sekhamane, also expressed admiration for China’s use of artificial intelligence in agriculture, calling for more exchanges between agricultural experts from Lesotho and China.
Peter Katjavivi, Speaker of Namibia’s National Assembly, emphasized the significance of such technologies in promoting food security.
He expressed a desire to apply these innovations in Namibia, particularly in developing seeds suitable for the country’s arid environment.
Katjavivi also sought to establish cooperation between the Namibian University of Science and Technology and Chinese agricultural research institutions.
Tulia Ackson, IPU President and Speaker of Tanzania’s National Assembly, was impressed by the openness of Chinese experts to collaborate with developing countries, expressing hope for future cooperation to enhance agricultural productivity globally.
