Tashkent, 1 August 2022 (TDI): Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Foreign Minister of Pakistan met with Jeenbek Kulubaev, Foreign Minister of Kyrgyzstan. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers meeting.

The Pakistani Foreign Minister congratulated his Kyrgyz counterpart on the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. He underscored strong cooperation between Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan at bilateral and multilateral levels, including at SCO.

Moreover, Bilawal Bhutto highlighted the importance of regular convening of formal mechanisms among the two states, particularly of Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) and Bilateral Political Consultations (BPC).

Both the leaders agreed to remain in regular contact. Apart from this, the Pakistani Minister also emphasized working on significant energy and road connectivity projects.

He, particularly, discussed Quadrilateral Agreement on Traffic-in-Transit (QATT) and the Central Asia-South Asia Electricity Transmission and Trade Project (CASA-1000).

Previous Ministerial Meetings under SCO

In 2019, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Foreign Minister of Pakistan, visited the Kyrgyz Republic to participate in the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting. He met with Chingiz Aidarbekov, Foreign Minister of Kyrgyzstan.

The parties held discussions about regional security, Afghanistan, and bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

Previously, in June 2019, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, took part in the Meeting of SCO Heads of States Council in Bishkek. He had a meeting with Sooronbai Jeenbekov, President of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The discussion covered topics of bilateral as well as multilateral cooperation between the countries.

Pak-Kyrgyz Relations

Pakistan was among the first countries to recognize Kyrgyzstan in 1992. Both states marked 30 years of diplomatic relations in May this year.

In 1995, the Diplomatic Mission of Pakistan was established in Kyrgyzstan. Both states also signed a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT).

Both parties are also signatories to CASA-1000, signed in 2016, and Quadrilateral Traffic and Transit Agreement (QTTA), signed in 1995. QTTA facilitates trade between the member states.
