Foreign Minister of Qatar with President of Korea

Seoul, 18 August 2022 (TDI): President of the Republic of Korea Yoon Suk-Yeol met with  Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, on Thursday.

During the meeting, Al-Thani conveyed the greetings of Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani to Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol. He also extended wishes of good health and happiness to Yoon Suk-Yeol.

Furthermore, he expressed continued progress and prosperity to the government and people of the Republic of Korea.

Consequently, Yoon Suk-Yeol entrusted Al-Thani with his greetings to the Amir, wishing him good health and happiness.

He also expressed wishes for the State of Qatar’s continued progress, development, and prosperity.

During the meeting, they reviewed bilateral cooperation and ways to support each other in various fields.

The State of Qatar’s preparations to host the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 were also discussed in the meeting.

Remarks by President of South Korea

Yoon Suk-Yeol expressed his country’s aspiration to strengthen relations with the State of Qatar. The strengthening of relations would be in the fields of energy, technology, and food security.

On Wednesday, an agreement was signed between Qatar and South Korea regarding mutual exemption of visa requirements for citizens of the two countries.

Furthermore, he underscored that this agreement would strengthen relations between the State of Qatar and the Republic of Korea.

He also praised the efforts of the State of Qatar in mediating between the United States and the Afghan Taliban.

He applauded Doha’s hosting of the indirect round of talks between the US and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Qatar- Korea Diplomatic Relations 

The diplomatic relations between the State of Qatar and the Republic of Korea started in 1974.

Since then, bilateral relations between both countries have seen a lot of political, economic and cultural developments and a number of mutual visits.

The two countries succeeded in concluding a number of agreements and MOUs in various fields including economy, technology, commerce, investments, avoidance of double taxation, culture, sports, civil aviation, and security cooperation.
