Beijing/Milan, 22 August 2021 (TDI): State Councilor and Foreign Minister of China, Wang Yi, had a phone discussion with his Italian counterpart, Luigi Di Miao, on the Afghanistan situation. Wang said that the common concern of the whole international community is connecting with Afghanistan’s peaceful future. In this context, he made it clear that the people of Afghanistan should choose their future.
Wang Yi also said that the Taliban’s stance seems cooperative but despite the positive progress, there are some factors in Afghanistan that have become the reason for unrest and risk in the country. He presented two-way outs of the situation, the first is coercive, and the second is cooperative. He favored the latter approach.
Luigi Di Maio also favored a cooperative approach and said Italy is looking forward to bring G20 states on one page for the solution of this issue. He highlighted the regional and international influence that China has and told Wang that Beijing can play a significant role in the present political situation of Kabul.
The Foreign Ministers of the two states also exchanged views on issues of common interest such as the Winter Olympics, and both sides assured support to each other. In the last Di Miao stressed the willingness of Italy to work with China.
