First Gambling License Issued in UAE

DUBAI (TDI): The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has issued first commercial gaming operator’s license to hotel and casino operator Wynn Resort.

The license was by the UAE’s General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority.

The Las Vegas-based casino operator is developing a luxury resort, Wynn Al Marjan Island, in Ras Al Khaimah as part of a joint venture with Marjan and RAK Hospitality Holding.

This groundbreaking license comes as the UAE has recently established a federal entity to regulate gambling, ending years of speculation about the country’s stance on the industry.

Historically, gambling has been illegal in the conservative Gulf region.

The move to allow gambling aligns with the UAE’s efforts to enhance its position as a leading trade, tourism, and financial hub in the region.

Last month, the UAE also introduced a series of legal reforms aimed at attracting foreign investment and bolstering its economy.

The Ras Al Khaimah government communications office and RAK Hospitality Holding did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Reuters.
