Al Rayyan, 22 November 2022 (TDI): The United States (US) and Wales played to a 1-1 draw in the first opening match of Group B, on 21 November at Ahmad bin Ali stadium, Al-Rayyan. This was the first opening match of group B in the FIFA World Cup 2022.

The other two teams in the group are England and Iran, who played a match later in the day. US & Wales scored one goal each, drawing the match with equal points at the score table.

The US is appearing in the FIFA World Cup for the 11th time, they appeared last in the 2014’s world cup. While Wales is making their second appearance since 1958. They appeared in the 2022 world cup after 64 years.

Before yesterday’s match, both teams never played against each other in a competitive game. The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken while on his official visit to Qatar for holding strategic dialogue, was also present in the stadium to watch the match.

He congratulated the US Men’s soccer team and the Wales soccer team for their efforts in putting up a great fight during the match. The second match of the US is against England on 25 November at Al-Bayt stadium, Al-Khor, Qatar.

Highlights

The US dominated the match in the first half of the game. In the 36th minute of the game, US player Timothy Weah scored a goal and gave the US the lead in the first half.

The opposite team was overwhelmed by the pressure during the other half of the play and kept trying to score a goal. However, during the second half of the game, Gareth Bale from Wales struck a goal from the penalty spot, in the 82nd minute.

Only eight minutes were left to finish the play, and Bale equalized the score. Both teams displayed great spirit and put up a hard fight for the point.
