ISLAMABA 03 Sep 2024 (TDI): The federal government has appointed Zarrar Hasham Khan as the new Secretary for IT and Telecom on a contract basis for two years. The appointment was made through an open market process, and the Selection Board had completed interviews with candidates yesterday. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had formed a Selection Board headed by Federal Minister Aon Chaudhry, which had shortlisted three candidates.
Zarrar Hasham Khan brings with him over 20 years of experience in the telecom and IT sector, both locally and internationally. He is currently working as Group Chief Business Solutions Officer at Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited, where he is responsible for developing and delivering the entire ICT portfolio for B2B and B2G customers.
In his previous role at STC-Kuwait, Khan spearheaded one of the largest commercial deployments of 5G services in the world in 2019. He has also worked with leading telecom service providers such as Saudi Telecom Company and Mobilink GSM. Khan holds an MBA from the University of Warwick and a degree in electrical and electronics engineering from Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology.
As Secretary IT and Telecom, Khan will be responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of the country’s IT and telecom policies. His appointment is seen as a significant step towards accelerating Pakistan’s digital transformation and promoting the growth of the IT and telecom sector.

The government has expressed confidence in Khan’s abilities and experience, and expects him to play a key role in driving the country’s digital agenda forward. His appointment has been officially notified by the Establishment Division after the Prime Minister’s approval.
