EU’s Flagship Youth Initiative in Pakistan Comes to an End

Islamabad (TDI): The European Union’s flagship initiative in Pakistan “Power to the Youth” held its National Youth Conference in Islamabad at the Girl Guides Headquarters, which marks the official conclusion of the program aimed at empowering youth.

Funded by the European Union (EU) and initiated in 2021, PTY focused on supporting and empowering youth aged 15-29 across Pakistan, particularly women and the marginalized communities such as the transgenders. PTY provided vocational training and mentorship to more than 6000 individuals from five districts: Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Mirpur Khas and Sanghar.

“Since 2021, PTY has empowered 6000+ young people, incl women and transgender youth with skills training, leadership and economic opportunities,” EU’s mission in Pakistan posted from its official account on social media platform X

Over 50% participants in the project were female, while 95 transgenders were also trained to become the agents of change within their communities. The scope of the vocational trainings extended to the survivors of gender based violence, in order to empower them financially.

The closing event started with a warm welcome from Executive Director of the Program, Bilquis Tahira. She mentioned the efforts of all stakeholders of the project and the journey of the youth beneficiaries.

The Chairperson of National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC) highlighted the importance of youth engagement and also assured the government’s commitment to similar youth development initiatives.
