EU Council President meets Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman

Belgium, 9th September 2021 (TDI): President of the European Council, Charles Michel meet with Vietnam’s National Assembly Chair, Vuong Dinh Hue, and agreed to further enhance cooperation between the two sides.

The Council President welcomed the Vietnamese delegation to European Council to discuss the issues of common concern. Especially in relation to mutual support in the COVID-19 fight and post-pandemic economic recovery and the ASEAN-EU cooperation.

The President shared his views on peace and security in Indo-Pacific and rule-based order. He affirmed that the European Union wants to strengthen and expand its cooperation with Southeast Asia.

Due to the pandemic, the efficiency and progress of implementation of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) have experienced setbacks. The president of the European Council suggested that the two sides want to work harder to elevate the deal’s potential.

European Union is Vietnam’s leading patner in the field of trade and marketing. After the implementation of EVFTA, the bilateral trade between the two has expanded 18 percent despite the ongoing pandemic situation.

The EU has pledged to assist Vietnam in the pandemic combat including the access to vaccines of Covid-19 and medical supplies. Hue affirmed that Vietnam will continue to closely coordinate with the EU in multilateral cooperation mechanisms, and is willing to work as a bridge between the EU and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Both parties announced their support for ASEAN to be a region of stability, peace, prosperity,  maintaining security, safety, freedom of navigation, and aviation based on respect for international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
