Islamabad, 22 February 2022 (TDI): Ambassador Redwan Hussein, the Foreign Minister of Ethiopia met with the Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi. He arrived in Islamabad yesterday.

He conducted several successful meetings with the high-level officials of the foreign office of Pakistan, including the Foreign Minister and Foreign Secretary of Pakistan.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi received his Ethiopian counterpart at the Foreign Office. The Ethiopian Foreign Minister is visiting Pakistan as the Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali.

During the meeting, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi stated that Pakistan wanted to explore new avenues for cooperation between Pakistan and Ethiopia.

He welcomed the commencement of bilateral talks between the two states at the Foreign Secretary level. Shah Mahmood Qureshi praised Ethiopia’s decision to prioritize Pakistan amongst the states where it is establishing new diplomatic missions.

He also emphasized the significance of restoring direct flights between Karachi and Addis Ababa. This would be a significant measure for boosting bilateral trade as well as people-to-people exchanges.

Likewise, the Foreign Minister also underscored Pakistan’s “Engage Africa” policy to bolster across-the-board engagement with Africa and the measures adopted in this respect.

Whilst Ambassador Hussien on his part thanked the Government of Pakistan for its hospitality and reiterated Ethiopia’s wish for further improving bilateral relations, primarily in the economic and trade domains.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia shared the news on its official Twitter handle. It also shared that this is the first bilateral political consultation at this level.

Opening of an Embassy

Ethiopian State Minister for Foreign Affairs is visiting Pakistan on a two-day official visit. Among other high-level officials of Pakistan, he also met the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan.

Redwan Hussein also held a separate meeting with high-level officials of Pakistan. He held discussions of political and economic nature.

The State Minister of Ethiopia also announced the decision of opening an Embassy in Pakistan. He also announced the appointment of a new Ambassador to Pakistan to improve the ties between the two states. 

They, in particular, discussed ways to utilize the untapped potential of the two countries to expand relations in investment, trade, tourism, and people-to-people engagements.

Ambassador Redwan further highlighted the investment opportunities in Ethiopia and the inclusion of Pakistan in the e-visa list, which will attract the Pakistani business community to invest in Ethiopia.
