Islamabad (TDI): Ambassador of Ethiopia to Pakistan, Oumer Hussien Oba, held a meeting with Geir T. Tonstol, Country Director of the International Labor Organization (ILO), at the Ethiopian Embassy, to discuss areas of mutual cooperation and shared priorities.
During the meeting, the two officials exchanged views on ongoing collaboration between Ethiopia and the ILO, particularly in fields such as human resource development, labor standards, and industrial relations.
Both sides highlighted the importance of strengthening institutional cooperation to promote inclusive economic growth and improved workplace conditions.
Ambassador Oba briefed the visiting ILO official on Ethiopia’s growing role in promoting regional peace, security, and economic integration in the Horn of Africa.
He emphasized the country’s efforts to advance diplomacy and regional connectivity through major infrastructure initiatives, including aviation expansion and railway development projects that link Ethiopia with neighboring countries.
The ambassador noted that these large-scale projects, along with reforms in labor and industrial sectors, are helping to create new opportunities for employment, skills development, and sustainable economic progress.

He underscored Ethiopia’s commitment to working with international partners to strengthen labor institutions and improve workforce capacity.
Tonstol commended Ethiopia for the progress it has made in recent years and reaffirmed the ILO’s commitment to supporting the country’s labor sector.
He highlighted the organization’s continued efforts to help improve workplace environments, promote decent work standards, and strengthen industrial relations frameworks.
The ILO country director also recalled his previous stay in Ethiopia, expressing admiration for the country’s rapid development and transformation.
He praised Ethiopia’s rich cultural heritage and noted the strong potential of its tourism sector, which continues to attract increasing international attention.
Both sides agreed that collaboration between Ethiopia and the ILO remains vital for advancing labour standards and promoting sustainable economic development.
They expressed optimism about further strengthening cooperation through programs aimed at workforce development, institutional capacity building, and improved labour governance.
