Washington DC, 25 March 2023 (TDI): The Vice President of the United States (US), Kamala Harris had the distinct honor of swearing in Eric Garcetti as the new Ambassador to India.

Eric Garcetti, a dedicated public servant and former Mayor of Los Angeles, has been chosen to strengthen the US partnership with India.

In her statement, Vice President Harris praised the appointment of Garcetti as the next Ambassador to India. She noted that the US and India share a long-standing relationship based on shared values and mutual interests.

Moreover, Harris expressed her confidence in Ambassador Garcetti’s ability to build upon this partnership and work towards further strengthening ties between the two countries.

Responsibilities of the new Ambassador to India

For the information, he was nominated for the post by the US President in 2021. But his appointment was held up after allegations that he had overlooked accusations of sexual harassment against an aide when he was mayor.

On the other hand, Garcetti denied any wrongdoing. On Wednesday, the Senate confirmed the appointment of the 52-year-old by a vote of 52-42, though some Democrats expressed their reservations and voted against him.

Eric Garcetti got his Indian Ambassadorship

A graduate of Columbia University, Eric Garcetti was an officer in the US Navy for 12 years before he made his foray into politics. In 2013, he became the youngest mayor of Los Angeles in 100 years and the first Jewish person to be elected for the role.

During his tenure as Mayor of Los Angeles, Garcetti was instrumental in implementing policies aimed at promoting economic growth, combating climate change & reducing crime. He has also been an active advocate for human rights, racial equality, and social justice.

For the record, the US has not had an Ambassador to India since January 2021 even though the two countries have strong security and trade ties.
