Entire Village Buried Under Landslide in Sudan, 1000 Feared Dead

Darfur (TDI): An entire village named Tarasin, in western Sudan, was buried under a landslide that occurred on Sunday, leaving behind only one survivor and claiming 1000 lives.

The news of the landslide, which occurred due to days of heavy rain, came from Sudan Liberation Movement/Army – a group that controls the area where this tragedy happened.

Tarasin village is situated in Marra Mountains area of Darfur, a terrain that is hardly accessible by any kind of land transport. People turned to this region as they fled for safety from the fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The Liberation Movement group called for help from humanitarian groups, including the United Nations. Fears are that the bodies will stay buried in the absence of any help from humanitarian agencies. Sudan does not have the infrastructure or capacity to pull bodies from under the rubble.

The civil war in the country has paralyzed life completely, with famine declared in parts of Darfur region. The UN has called it the worst humanitarian crisis, with the civil war displacing 12 million people since 2023 while 150,000 people had been killed.

Though a natural calamity, the landslide followed by fears of no decent burial for the villagers of Tarasin is evident of how the civil war has worsened life in the country, so much so that people had to take refuge in a region which can barely support life.
